Susan Gallagher was the daughter of James M Gallagher and Mary Catherine 'Kate' McMannis. Very little is known of them other than what is found in census records. Both were born in Ireland, married ca 1855 in or near Rochester, Monroe County, New York and began their family in Orleans County of that state. They moved to Nebraska sometime between 1870 and 1875 and according to oral family history Kate died in Nebraska about one year after the Gallaghers arrived. Neither the death dates or burial locations are known for James or Mary Catherine. Kate Gallagher is last proven living in the 1875 Nebraska State Census at which time the family was located in Midland Precinct, Lancaster County. James Gallagher is last proven living in the 1880 census at which time he was located in Louisville, Cass County, Nebraska, widowed and living alone.

There were four children in the family: John (born 1859, death date and burial location unknown, married Mary Ann Dougherty), Susan, James (findagrave # 39840572) and Agnes, who died young (death date and burial location unknown and presumably born and died between census counts).

Susan Gallagher and Sylvester Judd were living in Holt County, Nebraska when they married in Yankton, South Dakota, on September 6, 1876.

They initially made their home in Inman and can be found in the 1880 census next door to Sylvester's parents, William and Sarah (Clymer) Judd.

According to oral family history, Sylvester and Susan moved to the Black Hills of South Dakota in 1883 where they ranched (running both cattle and horses), farmed, and prospected. Sylvester was the discoverer and original owner of the Spokane Lead and Silver Mine, which was lost over multiple lawsuits brought by investors and others making claims.

Following the birth of thier youngest children, twins Ester and Sylvester, Sylvester Sr. and Susan went their separate ways. Sylvester went to Arizona with their son Ralph, and Susan remained on the Judd Ranch. She raised the children on her own and with the help of her family proved up on her claim gaining title to 160 acres in 1911. In 1922 she handed over the ranch to her son Vincent to care for and Susan retired to a home in Hermosa where she lived with her daughters Ida and Esther. It was this home where she died in 1927. The death date and location for Sylvester Sr is unknown; his grave has not been found.

Susan was affectionately known as “Mother Judd” to those who knew her, whether family, friends or neighbors.

There were eight children born to Sylvester and Susan. The burial locations for two of their children are unknown:

Ralph Alonzo Judd, born 22 February 1879 Inman, Holt, Nebraska, died 8 January 1943 in Los Gatos, Santa Clara County, California.

Lawrence A. Judd, born 01 Sep 1887 Keystone, Pennington, South Dakota, died 23 October 1930 San Jose, Santa Clara County, California.

The infant Sylvester Judd who is buried in Susan's grave is her grandson, the son of Sylvester Judd Jr. and Josephine Bartolino.
