Army Sgt. Robinson was assigned to the 634th Brigade Support Battalion of the Illinois Army National Guard, Crestwood, Illinois. She died at Brooke Army Medical Center, San Antonio, Texas, of wounds sustained when an improvised explosive device detonated near her security post Jan. 17 in Kabul, Afghanistan. Simone graduated in 2005 from Thornton High School in Harvey, Illinois. While still a senior in high school, she talked her mom into giving her permission to join the Army National Guard in December 2004. In August 2008, her unit was deployed to Afghanistan. Her awards include the Purple Heart, National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal with M-device, Army Service Ribbon, NATO Medal and Combat Action Badge. She was also posthumously promoted to the rank of sergeant and awarded the Bronze Star Medal. Simone was a wonderful friend and daughter. She kept others laughing and would help anyone who needed it. She was also an achiever who never gave up. Even though Simone hated leaving behind her two year old daughter, she wanted to be a good role model for her and to make a better life for the both of them.
