Virginia Dominick Abrams, 97, of Newberry, died Monday, July 26, 2010, at White Oak Manor.

Born on January 25, 1913, in Prosperity, she was a daughter of the late Willie Lake Dominick and Pearle Harmon Dominick Wessinger.

Mrs. Abrams was a graduate of Newberry College and was a retired educator who got real joy and satisfaction from seeing young students enjoying independent reading.

In 1963 she won a national honor of first place in the "Middle Grade Activities Contest" in the teaching of reading.

She was a member of Aveleigh Presbyterian Church.

She is survived by a sister, Willie D. Pinson of Cross Hill; a niece, Betty Mayfield of Columbia; nephews, William R. Oswald of Chapin and Thomas R. Thomsen of St. Louis, MO.

She was predeceased by her husband of 51 years, Elisha C. Abrams; sisters, Nell D. Oswald and Elizabeth D. Thomsen and Mary Wessinger.

Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, July 29, 2010, at Prosperity Cemetery by the Rev. Mitchell VanMetre.

Memorials may be made to the Prosperity Cemetery Association, c/o Linda Counts, 212 Brown Street, Prosperity, SC 29127.
