John Bates was born in Center township, Noble County, Ohio March 7, 1824, and departed this life at his home in Enoch township, Noble Coble county, Ohio, November 7, 1912, aged eighty-eight years and eight months. He was the eldest of a family of six children, namely John, Joseph, Robert, Isaac, William and Margaret; all of his brothers and sister have preceded him to the great beyond. At the age of twenty-one years he was united in marriage to Christenure Lincicome and to this union of blessed memory were born nine children, Daniel, William and Sarah, deceased; Mrs Jane Weekley of West Virginia; Mrs Hannah Moore of West Virginia; Nathaniel and Henry of Caldwell, Ohio; Mrs Caroline Weekley of Derwent, Ohio and Isaac of Guthrie Center, Iowa. Mrs Bates died February 27, 1885 and a year afterward he was married to Mrs Hettie Shipley, who still survives him and the six children named above. Also by fory-seven grandchildren, forty-eight great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. John Bates commanded the esteem and affection of all who knew him and his death has cast a personal bereavement over the whole community. The funeral services were conducted by Rev Warner, who preached a very able and inspiring sermon, after which the remains were laid to rest by the side of his wife in the Archer's Ridge Cemetery to await the resurrection day.
