Ngon Ting Tom was born 28 April 1906 in Cheung hing hoiping, Canton, China. He immigrated to the United States without other family members arriving San Francisco, California on 14 May 1930. He resided in San Diego, CA and in time owned and operated his own whole sale produce company. A naturalized U.S. citizen he register with the Selective Service on 16 October 1940. Ngon was enlisted into the Army on 31 August 1942 entering the service at Los Angeles, Army Serial Number: 39533607. After basic training Ngon was selected for the enlisted pilot training program. Upon graduation he was promoted to Staff Sergeant as were all graduates of this enlisted pilot training along with transfer into the Army Air Forces.S/Sgt Tom was assigned to the 5318th Provisional Air Unit, which would later be Redesignated the 1st Air Commando Unit. Tom then deployed to the China-Burma-India (CBI) Theater. Here he served as a liaison pilot operating a Stinson L-5 light aircraft primarily in an air ambulance role, assigned to Able Company, 1st Air Commando Unit. On 10 February 1944 he was based at an airfield at Ledo, India. A radio request was received to evacuated injured personnel of Merrill’s Marauders located at Shingbwiyang, Burma (now Shin Bway Yang, Kachin, Myanmar) about 50 miles southeast of Ledo. Four L-5 aircraft were dispatched for this evacuation mission. As this formation approached the landing area near Shingbwiyang. Burma the propeller of S/Sgt Tom’s plane cut into the tail of the L-5 being piloted by S/Sgt William H. Neff causing his plane to crash killing him. Tom attempted a forced landing on the road but crashed into trees and was also killed.S/Sgt Tom’s remains were recovered and taken to Ledo for initial interment. After the war Tom’s remains were recovered from the Ledo Cemetery and returned to the U.S. being permanently interred on 31 October 1949 at the Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery, San Diego, CA.S/Sgt Tom bio by Scott Muselin – Vindicator I
