Dr. James Lowry Smith, life-long Murray resident and dentist, died Nov. 9, 1997 at Cottonwood Hospital of causes incident to age.

He was born Sept. 15, 1914 in Murray to Heber B. and Fern Lowry Smith. He graduated from Murray High School in 1934. He graduated from the College of Dentistry, University of Southern California, Los Angeles in 1939. He began practice of dentistry in Murray in Oct., 1939 and continued his practice perhaps more years than any other dentist in Utah, having not retired until his recent illness. His first office was in the First National Bank building, which also housed the local draft board during World War II. He donated his professional services to hundreds of young men as part of their pre-induction physical examinations.

Dr. Smith married Ida Harrell on March 28, 1952, later solemnized in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. Ida died November 25, 1978. He was an LDS ward clerk for 24 years, serving under four bishops. He was an accurate, methodical and caring individual. He enjoyed fishing and hiking. He took a great interest in fellow students of his high school and college years and delighted in reminiscing with them. His profession provided experiences of renewing those friendships, which he highly cherished. He appreciated class reunions and enjoyed reliving nostalgic events recorded in yearbook pictures and personal photographs.

During the depression years he, with friends, backpacked several times into the High Uintahs, and enjoyed fishing in the mountain lakes. As a youth, he cut trees for logs and built a family cabin in 1929 in the Sundance area. He hiked that area extensively and hiking there became a family tradition. Sorrow resulted therefrom, when 16 year old son, Richard died, while hiking near Timpanogas, June 15, 1969.

He is survived by his son, James Harrell Smith of Murray; a special friend, Joan Weaver; and cousins, the McArthur family and Charles Cox, all of Provo.

The family wishes to express their appreciation to Dr. Kevin Stigge and Dr. Craig Wilkinson for all their dedicated care.

Funeral services will be held Friday, November 14, 1997 in the Vine Street LDS Chapel, 363 East Vine St. Friends may call at Jenkins-Soffe Mortuary, 4760 South State St., Thursday 6 to 8 p.m. and Friday at the church one hour prior to services. Interment, Murray City Cemetery.
