PERRY - James D. "Sarge" Aitkin, Sr., 68 years old, of Wila, Newport, went to be in the arms of his Lord on Sunday, March 1, 2009 in the Carlisle Regional Medical Center.
He was born May 19, 1940 in Milroy the son of the late Harry T. and Beatrice (Bailey) Aitkin.
He served 21 years in the U.S. Army with three tours of Vietnam. He retired from the Army Depot in New Cumberland and the Army War College in Carlisle.
He was a member of Newport VFW #34, Newport American Legion #177, and Loyal Order of Moose #925, Millerstown. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and was an avid gun collector.
Surviving are his wife of 46 years, Dorothy H. Aitkin; children, Ruth Singer and husband Paul of Shippensburg; Theresa Varner and husband Ronald of McVeytown; J. David Aitkin, Jr. of Harrisburg and Karen Shannafelter of Duncannon; 7 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by granddaughter, Gina M. Stewart.
Viewing will be held Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. from the David Myers Funeral Home, Newport. Graveside service will be held Thursday at 10 AM in the Wila Cemetery with Pastor Bert Bowen officiating with full military honors by the New Bloomfield VFW Post #7463.
