East Liverpool, Ohio - A man and his three young sons perished in a fire and explosion at a four-story frame apartment building here today.
The father was identified as Robert Wolfe, 26. The sons were Rickie, 5 months; Bobby Jr., 1 and Randy 2.
The mother was reported in critical condition at a hospital.
The acting county coroner said the children died of suffocation.
Tweleve other persons escaped the bl;az, cause of which was undetermined.
Dominick Volino, who attempted to resue the family, said he ran onto the porch of the Wolfes' first floor apartment, kicked in the windows but driven back by the heat and flames.
Volino said he saw the father stagger out the door, then turn and stumble back into the apartment in search of his children.
Fire Chief Charles Bryan said a gas heater may have contributed to the explosion, which blew out windows in the building, but had nothing to do with the origin of the fire.
