Captain Herbold was attached to the 98th Bomb Group, 343rd Bomber Squadron from Spokane Air Force Base. He was the pilot of B-29-Superfortress #42-65355 when he was killed in a crash four miles from the airbase at Great Falls, Montana, on February 15, 1950.
