Abrán S. Esquibel, age 88, a resident of Belen, passed away on Wednesday, Feb. 25, surrounded by his loving family.

He was born in Abó, N.M., and graduated from La Joya High School. He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II. Abrán married Rose (Rosenda) Durán in 1947. They lived in New Mexico from 1947 to 1952.

He earned a B.A. in Education from St. Joseph,s College in Albuquerque and went on to teach elementary school in the Mountainair area. They lived in Barstow, Calif., from 1952 to 1977, where he worked as a civil service employee at Fort Irwin Army Base, Calif., and then returned to New Mexico after retirement.

Abrán enjoyed spending time with his family, gardening, camping, playing the guitar and the accordion, investing, gambling, lottery scratchers, and working as a volunteer tax preparer. He was an active participant in Our Lady of Belen Spanish Choir and the Cursillo Movement.

He was preceeded in death by his lovely wife, Rose Esquibel; his parents, Luis and Josefita Esquibel; a brother, Tomasito Esquibel; his sisters, Manuela Padilla, Leonor Romero and Trinidad Griego; and a great-grandson, Ezebiel David James Esquibel. Abrán is survived by his loving children, Patricia (Patsy) Lambert and husband, John D. of Belen, Abrán Esquibel, Jr. and wife, Olivia of Claremont, Calif., Felix Esquivel and wife, Elizabeth of Grand Terrace, Calif., Jose C. Esquivel of San Bernardino, Calif., Diola García and husband, Carlos of Belen, and Sandra Cuomo and husband, Richard of El Cajon, Calif.; 17 grandchildren; 21 great- grandchildren; and sisters, Lizzie Trujillo of Belen, Lena Ulibarri of Barstow, Calif., and Christina Luna and husband, Florian of Punta de Agua, N.M. He is also survived by many loving nephews, nieces, cousins, friends, caregivers and his special pet Chihuahua, Mijo.

All services will be held at Our Lady of Belen Catholic Church, beginning with a visitation at 2:30 p.m., on Sunday, March 1, with a rosary being recited at 3:30 p.m. A final visitation will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Monday, March 2, with a Funeral Mass to be celebrated at 11 a.m. Interment will follow at Our Lady of Belen Memorial Gardens.
