She was born in Traverse City on Jan. 28, 1918, in East Bay Township, during the blizzard of 1918. She was born to Ethel D. (Eldredge/Austin) and R. George Ward.
Amy lived her entire life in the Traverse City area and thought there was no better place. She and her husband of 64 years raised four children, William (Diane) of Cranberry Township, Pa., Janet (Michael) McManus of Lake Leelanau, Kathryn (Joseph) Schueller and David (Christy) Courtad of Traverse City. She enjoyed watching her grandchildren, Susan Courtad, Jennifer (Jon) Edwards, Senator Michelle A. McManus (Keith) Nelson, James (Susan) McManus, Amy (Jason) Hillier, Sarah (Mark) West, Adam Schueller, Joshua, David (Brandie), Justin (Kim) and Jacob Courtad and his special friend, Jessica, grow up and go on to have 17 great-grandchildren, with a new arrival from Korea expected in June.
Like her beautiful flowers and gardens, she enjoyed seeing people grow and change with the seasons. The soil, she said, was her therapy, "It gives you a purpose and great joy to see the fruits of your work, and it also was a great way to take out frustrations." To her, there was nothing better than digging in the dirt. Neighbors enjoyed her ever-blooming yard.
She loved to cook and enjoyed sharing her creations with others. Children who grew up in the neighborhood still comment about her popcorn balls that she made for Halloween. Many came back several times for just one more.
On Oct. 1, 1938, she married Kenneth J. Courtad at Immaculate Conception Church in Traverse City. She worked for Parson's Aviation during World War II while her husband, Ken, was over seas.
Amy, with her husband, purchased the "Country Squire Men's Wear Inc." in 1966 and worked alongside him until they retired in 1987. They spent many winters in the Dade City, Fla., area after retirement.
She was a member of the DAV auxiliary and was also a member of St. Francis Catholic Church and the Altar Society. She was in charge of many Church Bazaars and bake sales held there.
Amy was the youngest of 12 children and is survived by her four children, 11 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren, and many nieces, nephew and extended family.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Kenneth; granddaughter, Brandie Courtad; brothers, Paul, Mark, Coover (Al), Benjamin, Robert, Richard and Ralph; and sisters, Ila, Mary, Margaret, and Florence.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be held at noon on Saturday, April 12, at St. Francis Catholic Church. Visitation will be held at the church today, April 11, from 4 until 8 p.m., with the wake service being held at 7 p.m. Burial will be in Oakwood Catholic Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to Munson Hospice, St. Francis Church, Father Fred Foundation, the Brandie Rose Foundation c/o Traverse City State Bank, or the charity of one's choice.
