Thomas Negley Foster, 86, of Oceanside, Calif., formerly of Lima, Ohio, died May 17, 2001, at his residence.
He was born Aug. 3, 1914, in Lima to the late Bert R. and Grace Bell Hare Foster.
In 1940 his married Ruth May Doty, who survives in Oceanside, Calif.
Mr. Foster graduated from Lima South High School in 1933, where he ran track and played basketball and football. He also was a successful amateur boxer and golfer. After high school, he worked for a time with the Civilian Conservation Corps.
He was a golfer's golfer winning many tournaments. He won the Lima News City Golf Championship from 1941-1943, and in 1944 he won the Lima City Open. He founded the Lima Golf Association along with Dr. Donald English. He would return to Lima every summer to play golf with his old golfing buddies at Lost Creek and Shawnee golf course.
In 1946, he relocated to Southern California and began a career in the design, manufacture and sale of neon signs, along with all types of electrical advertising. He was active in many civic and community activities, including the board of directors of the Oceanside Chamber of Commerce and Tourism Committee. He was a life member of Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Lodge 1561 and a 50-year member of Lodge 381 Free and Accepted Masons, Oceanside, Calif. He was an Army veteran of World War II. Although a longtime resident of California, he was a true son of Lima.
Survivors also include a son, Thomas N. Foster, Jr. of Phoenix; and two sisters, Julia Winetrout of Springfield, Mass., and Mary Elizabeth Rains of Columbus.
Graveside services will begin at 11:30 a.m. Saturday in Woodlawn Cemetery, Lima.
