Martin Newman, 89, of Jacksonville, died Saturday, February 28, 2009, at his residence. He was born February 9, 1920, in St. Louis, Missouri, the son of Joseph and Rose Kasolkovitz Newman. He married Jeanne Steinberg on June 8, 1941, in St. Louis, and she survives.

He is also survived by two sons, Richard (wife, Toby) Newman of Houston, Texas and Jim (wife, Susi) Newman of Jacksonville; two daughters, Linda (lifelong companion, Sandy Pierce) Price of Wheaton and Laurie (husband, Michael) Hayes of Tampa, Florida; six grandchildren, Chad Newman of Springfield, Jeff (wife, Andrea) Newman of Jacksonville, Mark (Elise) Newman of Houston, Texas, Rebecca (husband, David) Zey of McKinney, Texas, and Jennifer Hayes and Sarah Hayes, both of Tampa; and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one son, Robert Allen Newman, and one brother, Manuel Newman.

Mr. Newman owned and operated Martin Newman Shoe Company of Jacksonville. The company was founded in 1942. Newman moved to Jacksonville to take over the shoe department at the Emporium. His company grew to include 22 stores with 125 employees and locations in Illinois and Florida. Martin Newman was recognized throughout the United States for his involvement and leadership in specialty shoe store retailing. He was considered a leader in concept shoe store management, the use of technology, and was recognized as an innovator in mall shoe store retailing. He was elected to the board of National Shoe Retailers Association (NSRA) in 1972, where he served as chairman of the finance committee and vice-chairman of the technology committee.

Mr. Newman served as a director with NSRA for 30 years. In 1986, he was honored by the Illinois Retail Merchants Association by being chosen Illinois Retailer of the Year. One of his most prized possessions was the RETAIL 1 license plate, which Secretary of State Jim Edgar commissioned and presented to him in person. Forever community minded, Mr. Newman was very active in the Jacksonville Chamber of Commerce, serving on nearly every committee, culminating with the presidency in 1980. As a member of the Contact Club, he was a perennial Million Point Achiever, and received awards for that every year. He was an avid believer in downtown Jacksonville. He served diligently on the urban renewal committee. Newman was president of the Downtown Jacksonville Merchants Association for many years. He also helped organize JAC-PAC, the political fundraising arm of the Chamber of Commerce, and was active in local economic development by helping new businesses get started in the community. He was co-chairman of the committee that raised funds for the construction of Sherwood Eddy YMCA.

A believer in education, he helped secure funding for the new planetarium at Jacksonville High School, was active in the CACHE fundraiser, which benefited the local colleges, and had a scholarship for Junior business majors established in his name at Illinois College by his daughter Linda. He was honored to be named Honorary Parade Marshall at Illinois College in 1986. He was an adult leader in Boy Scouts of America, and received the Silver Beaver Award, the highest scouting honor awarded to an adult. Mr. Newman was a member of Temple B'rith Shalom of Springfield, Jacksonville Rotary, Harmony Lodge #3 A.F & A.M., and Zingabad Grotto.
