Karl Schramm was born to Jacob and Lena (Liller) Schramm in southern Ohio, and was raised there with five sisters. His father was a machine operator/repairman in the coal mines. Karl joined the US Navy in 1923. He saw action in Nicaragua in 1927 and was promoted to Lieut j.g. before returning to Belmont County, Ohio where he married Ziza Richardson in 1929 and worked in retail tea and coffee sales. He rejoined the Navy in the early Depression years and moved with his wife and daughter (Ziza Mae) to San Diego, Calif. They lived in Shanghai, China for a period of time while he was stationed there. During WW II Karl served aboard the Whale, the first submarine to enter Tokyo Harbor (1942). He was awarded the Silver Star. He retired from the Navy in 1948.
