“Death and Funeral of Mr. J. A. MATTHEWS. // Our paper had gone to press when the funeral notice of Mr. J. A. MATTHEWS was received yesterday morning and consequently we were unable to make a notice of his death, which occurred at 1:30 o’clock Monday night. He had been ill only one week of typhoid pneumonia an dhis death was an unexpected shock to his friends. He was born in Upson county and was fifty-six years of age. Mr. MATTHEWS came to this city from Stewart county a year ago and had invested largely in real estate. He was an enterprising business man and a good citizen, whose death is deeply regretted by a large circle of friends. He was a brother to Judge J. M. MATTHEWS, of Talbotton [sic –this is in error – see retraction below], and J. L. MATTHEWS, Esq[uire], of Pineville [same]. He leaves a wife and four children, who have the sympathy of this entire community in their sad bereavement. // His funeral took place yesterday afternoon from his late residence, on Forsyth street, at 4 o’clock. The services were conducted by Rev. A. B. CAMPBELL and were largely attended. The following gentlemen were the pallbearers: E[lias] G[rout] RAIFORD, R. W. LEDSINGER, B. B. HINES, Ab WOOLDRIDGE, J. B. SLADE, R. J. GREGORY, S. H. BARTLETTE and W. J. WATT.” [Columbus (GA) Enquirer-Sun newspaper, Wednesday, 16 MAY 1883, p. 4.]

“A Correction. // Mr. J. A. MATTHEWS, whose death we noticed yesterday morning, was not a brother of Judge J. M. MATTHEWS, of Talbotton, and J. L. MATTHEWS, of Pineville.
