SP4 Mendez #
MOS:
SP 4 Salvador J. Mendez, 19, a personal friend of the city's eighth victim, Cpl. Tom Galvez, lost his life in hostile action Monday. Galvez was killed by an enemy mortar shell May 27.
Tragedy was nothing new to young Mendez. He had lost his mother when he was only nine months old. And death almost came about a month before Galvez died. Mendez was awarded the Purple Heart May 5 for injuries received in another enemy encounter.
The son of Leo Mendez, of Benson, who is employed by Southern Pacific Railroad, the young soldier had lived with his uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. C.E. Guzman, for a number of years. He has one other survivor, a brother, Abram, 23, of Casa Grande.
A telegram arrived Wednesday from Major Gen. Kenneth G. Wickham, of the Adjutant General's office, which expressed deep regret. It said Mendez lost his life Aug. 19 as a result of wounds received while serving as a gunner on a military vehicle during a combat operation.
A graduate of St. Anthony's School, he later attended Casa Grande High School before enlisting in the Army on Aug. 2, 1967.
Requiem Mass will be held this Saturday morning at 10 at St. Anthony's Catholic Church for Salvador J. Mendez, SP4 U.S. Army, 19, killed in action Aug. 19 in the Republic of Vietnam.
The Casa Grande youth was sent to Vietnam in January. He received the Purple Heart in May for wounds suffered in another enemy action. He is the ninth youth from this area to give his life in the Vietnam conflict.
Born Nov. 19, 1948 in Casa Grande, Mr. Mendez was a graduate of St. Anthony Parochial School. He attended Casa Grande Union High School until his enlistment in the Army in August of 1967. He resided with his aunt and uncle, Mr. and Mrs. Candelario Guzman.
He is survived by his father, Mr. Leopoldo Mendez; his sisters and brothers in Benson, AZ; and another brother, Abraham, of Casa Grande. Other survivors are his paternal grandfather, Placido Mendez, and his maternal grandfather, Abraham Guzman, both of Casa Grande.
An Army detail from Fort Huachuca will conduct full military graveside services at Mountain View Cemetery.
