Marguerite Barker was born Jan. 30, 1911, in Harper, Texas, to Charles E. Bein and Selma Pape Bein. She died at her daughter's home in Houston, Texas, on Saturday, July 28, 2007, after a year-and-a-half battle with lymphoma. Memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Monday, July 30, at Kerbow Funeral Home in Sonora, Texas. Internment will follow in Sonora Cemetery. She was married to the love of her life, Granville Barker, on Nov. 17, 1929. She and Granville and their two young daughters moved to Sonora in 1933. Granville and his brothers, Bill and Raymond, worked as barbers at the Corner Barber Shop during those difficult Depression years, where they made lifelong friends. Marguerite was a gifted seamstress and made all of her own clothes and the girls' clothes. In 1949, Granville, Marguerite and dear friends Addah and Mack Cauthorn built the Best Western Motel, a liquor store and barber shop in Sonora. Marguerite was office manager and bookkeeper, and their living quarters became the gathering place for their ranch family friends when in town. The swimming pool was a very popular place with the young people and grandchildren during summer vacations. After the motel was sold, Granville pursued his lifelong love of horse racing. Since horse racing was not legal in Texas, they had to take their horses to many out-of-state tracks to run. After a number of years, they decided the sport was for the wealthy and sold their horses and returned to their home in Sonora. They leased a small ranch out of Sonora, and Marguerite continued to operate it after Granville's death. Her neighbor, Joe David Ross and partners, were building the Devil's River Motel, and he asked Marguerite to help them with the start-up. She worked there in the office until she retired at age 85! She is preceded in death by her husband, Granville; daughter Peggy Sue Hudson Fowler; sister Mary Belle Stubblefield; and brother Morris R. Bein. She is survived by her daughter, Billie Joe and husband Jack Donald Nicholas; grandchildren Nick D. Nicholas, Vicki Jo Maddy, Clifford Hudson and Craig Hudson; great-grandchildren David Nicholas and Allyson Nicholas, Lea Ann Riekes, Shauna St. Cyr, Cameron St. Cyr and Jay Hudson; special niece Selma Nelle Glasscock; nephew Hayden Barker; former son-in-law Albert Fowler; cousin Raymond Pape; special friends Joe David Ross, Dorothy Baker and Fay Thorp; all her Church of Christ family; and so many others we cannot name, but we know you and thank you for your friendship and love.
