Gravestone reads "Marshall, Samuel Sr., Revolutionary War Soldier, settled in Scioto County in 1796, died shortly after 1816."
From "History of Lower Scioto Valley, Ohio 1884"-Samuel Marshall, Sr., the first pioneer and permanent settler of Scioto County, was born June 29, 1750 in Washington County, PA.......in February, 1796, Mr. Marshall loaded his goods into his pirogue and moved up to a point about three miles above the Scioto River, and nearly opposite Tygart's Creek, where he concluded to locate...Those who came with him were (his wife, Nancy) and Jesse, Samuel Jr., Polly and Salina. The first child born in the county was Fanny Marshall."John Lindsey and Samuel Marshall were the first two permenent white settlers in Scioto County.
