Maude Helen Ryman was born in Lincoln, Nebraska, the daughter of David Barnes and Loretta Downend Ryman. In 1893, she accompanied her mother to Kansas. Etta had been summoned by her sister, Mary Gibbs, to assist in the care of their father, Thomas Downend, who had been injured in a fall from a farm wagon. Since Etta liked the area, her husband joined her there and they decided to remain in Kansas.

Maude and her parents lived in a dugout near Cumberland for a short period of time and in September, 1895, they moved to a farm known as the "Conners Place" and remained there for eight years. The house on the Conners Place was a three room sod house with a summer kitchen attached and was considered much above the usual sod house of the day. The walls were plastered and glass windows were installed in the walls.

In one of Maude's memoirs, she states that one of her clearest memories of this house was that each fall, fresh straw was laid on the floor and rag carpets were stretched over this straw for the winter season.

While living on the Connors Place, Dave began to acquire land to the east and in 1904, he built the house which would serve as their home until they retired in 1920 and moved to Colby.

For six years after graduation, Maude taught in the rural schools of Thomas and Rawlins counties until her marriage.

On April 12, 1914, Maude was united in marriage to Leroy Davis Wisdom but his health began to fail soon after their marriage and on May 12, 1915, he passed away. On July 1 1915, just 49 days after her husband's death, their son was born on the Ryman farm. Maude and her son continued to live with her parents until 1919 when she and Laurence moved to Colby and she took employment with Smith's Grocery and Department Store.

In 1936, Maude married Ray Alcott, an associate at Smiths Store for many years. This may have been the happiest time of Maude's life as she now had companionship and one to share with. However, this also was to be short-lived as Ray suffered a fatal heart attack in January, 1939.

Maude returned to her father's home and lived there with him until his death in 1951. Upon her father's death the large house became too much for Maude to maintain so the house was sold and she purchased a little house on School Street in Colby. She again resumed the role of salesclerk for McDonald's Department Store in Colby and spent several years there until her health caused her to resign.

Maude was a member of the Colby Methodist Church and served for many years as the Secretary of Sunday School. She was a charter member of the Hilda Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star and continued her membership throughout her life. She was also a member of the Thimble Club which she enjoyed greatly.

In January, 1974, her health failed to the point where she could no longer live alone and was in need of continual nursing care. Her son, Laurence lived in Manhattan, Kansas and so to be closer to him, she entered the Mary Marshall Nursing Home in Marysville, Kansas where she remained a resident until her death on December 10, 1982. She was buried beside her first husband, Roy Wisdom in Colby, Kansas.
