LENN L. STEVENS DIES AT ASHLAND AFTER AN OPERATION
WELL-KNOWN ATTORNEY-FARMER OF LANE COUNTY EXPIRED THIS MORNING

Word was received by wire this forenoon that Lenn L. Stevens, of this city, died at Ashland this morning at 3 o'clock. He went there several weeks ago hoping that the change would do him good, but he failed to improve in health, and it was decided a few days ago to operate upon him for appendicitis. He entered the hospital there Monday, and, according to the information received here this morning, the operation was performed last evening, but the patient failed to rally from the shock, and death came before he regained consciousness.

The remains will leave Ashland this afternoon and will arrive in Eugene on the 2:43 o'clock train tomorrow morning. They will be taken to the Gordon chapel, where the funeral services will be held Friday forenoon at 10 o'clock, and the remains will be laid to rest in the Masonic cemetery.

Mr. Stevens, who was for a number of years a practicing attorney in Eugene, serving for a time as city attorney, but for the past six years or more being engaged in farming northeast of the city, was aged nearly 41 years. He was born on the old home place northeast of Eugene, on November 26, 1869, and was married to Miss Carrie Smeed, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Stephen Smeed, on July 3, 1899. He was graduated from the University of Oregon in 1892, and won the Failing prize for the best oration delivered at the commencement exercises. Two years later he was graduated from the law department of the University of Michigan, at Ann Arbor, after which he came to Eugene and opened a law office, retiring from practice after several years and going to the farm. He is survived by his wife, his mother and brother, Welby, of Springfield, besides a host of friends who deeply mourn his death.
