Navy Lt. Frederick Richard Putnam, 28, son of City Councilman and Mrs. Harry L. Putnam, of 323 Michigan Street in Redlands, was killed in a plane crash near Hall Summit, Louisiana, according to word received in Redlands. Two other Navy fliers also died in the crash of the plane which was bound from the Atlanta Naval Air Station to Barksdale field in Louisiana. A heavy rain and wind storm was blamed for the tragedy.
Lieutenant Putnam, who lived in the Redlands from 1932 until 1937 and attended Redlands High School, was a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis. He held a masters degree in aeronautical engineering.
His mother, Mrs. Elizabeth Putnam, left to be with her son's widow and baby son at their home in Albuquerque.
