Robert Sellers served in Company D, Captain Mosley Baker's/Burleson's Regiment/ First Regiment of Texan Volunteers. This was the largest company in San Houston's Army. He also fought in the Mexican War of 1848.

A letter written by Robert's son Isaac in 1922 stated that Robert was "born on the bank of the Wabash River in Illinois. Indians began to raid that state when he was a small babe and his father Isaac Sellers moved to Gibson County, West Tennessee...."
