Lawrence Kynast was the son of Karl F. A. Kynast and Sarah Ann Stehle. As a young man, he worked as a clerk at the family grocery store in Saginaw, Michigan. In 1904, he and a friend named Alfred Pierce visited St. Louis, Missouri to attend the Louisiana Purchase Exposition, or St. Louis Exposition as it is more commonly known. Lawrence married Florence Libby Barber in Saginaw on September 12, 1906. Shortly after their marriage, the couple moved to Olin, Illinois to start a new life together, but returned to Saginaw when it was learned that Lawrence's stepfather Oswald was dying of stomach cancer. Lawrence took over the family grocery store and they remained in Saginaw for the rest of their lives. Lawrence and Florence had one son, Edmund Randall Kynast, who tragically died of bronchial pneumonia when he was only five years old. The grief-stricken parents left Randall's toys on display in their home as a memorial to their beloved son. Lawrence retired from the grocery business in 1930. He and Florence then briefly lived in Garden Grove, California where he worked as a salesman, but the couple soon returned to Saginaw where Lawrence retired. They moved from the east side of town to a brand new home on the west side of Saginaw, paid for, in part, by the inheritance he received from his cousin Clara's estate. Lawrence did find a part-time job as a parking lot attendant, it is assumed, to supplement his income. He died at his home on State Street from a coronary thrombosis in 1959 and was buried at Saginaw's Forest Lawn Cemetery.
