Clara Louise Emmeline Kynast was the daughter of Oswald Arthur Kynast and Anna Magdalena Stehle. She began her career around 1900 as a bookkeeper for her father's Saginaw, Michigan grocery store. Four years later, she became a stenographer for the Gately & Donovan Company, a home furnishings supplier. In 1905, she was hired as an accountant for the J. T. Wylie & Company, a manufacturer of lumber products. This evolved into the Batchelor Timber Company which, in turn, became the Bliss & Van Auken Lumber Company. Clara worked her way up in the company to become the secretary and treasurer. She earned the reputation of being an astute businesswoman. At times, Clara all but ran the company and was known as "the boss". She was a very outgoing person with many friends. In her early years, she enjoyed cycling and parties. She also developed a fondness for travel, which included a cruise through the Panama Canal on the way to California. Clara was always well-dressed and was "dramatic-looking" with bright red hair. She died of cervical cancer on November 25, 1946, leaving her entire estate to her cousin Lawrence Kynast.
