Cecil Baker died Saturday, Feb. 21, 2009, at his home. He was the oldest son of nine children. He was born Dec. 17, 1918, in Canadian, Okla., to his parents, William Edgar and Sarah Griffith (Nevel) Baker. He had four brothers, Leroy, Wayne, Raymond and Glen; also four sisters, Frances, Helen, Evelyn and El Wanda. They all grew up on a farm and attended school in Union City. Mr. Baker was a lifetime Canadian County area resident except for the time spent away serving his country. Cecil joined the Navy on Jan. 12, 1942, and was honorably discharged on Dec. 12, 1945. He obtained the rank of Gunners Mate 1st Class. He received three Battle stars for three major battles in the Philippines, New Guinea and Okinawa. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion and the Disabled American Veterans.

After being discharged, he returned back to farming. On July 11, 1946, Cecil married Willie Stella Teague from Calumet, where they farmed and raised cattle. Then he teamed up with Ross Feed and Seed in El Reno and went into the chicken business and sold eggs. He raised wheat and hay crops, also baling the hay for his cattle. They purchased several other area farms, which Cecil farmed. He lost his beloved wife on May 1, 2006, after nearly 60 years. He remained in El Reno where they had moved when her health started to fail. Cecil and Willie had two sons, Perry Lee Baker of El Reno and Wesley Baker and wife, Deborah of Calumet; two granddaughters, La Dana Stanke and husband, Mark of Calumet and Regina Emmons and husband, Justin of Woodward; one grandson, William Baker of Okmulgee; and the joy of his life, three great-granddaughters, Chasity, Da Lana and Kathrine Stanke, all of Calumet.

He married Evelyn Fisher on April 1, 2008, and to this marriage she brought her daughter, Angela Deal of Los Angeles, Calif.
