Race Car Driver. Born in Detroit, Michigan, he was nicknamed "Dean of the Speedway" and was one of the most noted drivers of the Indianapolis 500. In his long career driving at the Indy 500, he competed in sixteen races (1930-41, 1946, 1948, 1951-52) and drove over 5,000 miles. He was killed in a crash in the south turn of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway during a practice run for the 1953 Indianapolis 500.
