Charles Kelly was born a McEntire and buried a McIntyre, and during his 1st marriage he spelled his name McEntyre. The original name of Scottish origin was spelled MacIntyre in Scotland.

The spelling of the surname, as the family's oral history goes, was changed from McIntyre to McEntire during a war in which the pay records of two men who shared the same name of William McIntyre were constantly being confused. It was the father of Charles Kelly, William H. McIntyre, who agreed to change his name from McIntyre from McEntire in order to separate out the identities of the two men. Since Charles Kelly's father AND his grandfather were both named William McIntyre, it is not known which one was the one who was in the war, but it is presumed to be Charles Kelly's father who changed the spelling to accomodate the pay records, since it is he who is identified on other records and documents with the spelling of his surname as McEntire.

In this same respect, Charles Kelly's daughter was born with the spelling of her surname of McEntire in 1917 and her maiden name was later converted to the spelling of McIntyre. Thus, between the years of 1917 (when his youngest child was born) and 1937, (the year of Charles Kelly's death), is when the change of spelling of the surname occurred. The family does not know the exact date of the change. This was due in part to Charles Kelly's 1st born son, Earl Lester McEntire who decided that all in the family would change the spelling back to its original form of McIntyre.

Charles Kelly was born to William Henry McEntire and Hannah Rice McEntire in Phillipstown, White County, Illinois. Charlie was married twice. The first time to Dollie Jane Gunn in 1895 in Poplar Bluff, Butler County, Missouri, but that marriage ended abruptly between the years 1896 to 1898 and no children were born to that union according to the handed-down oral history. However, since that handed-down history has been known, another possibility has been found that could link Charles Kelly to a daughter named Melissa Jane McEntyre Spears, the daughter or step-daughter of John Spears and Charles Kelly's 1st wife, Dollie Jane Gunn, who later married John Spears.

On 16 Oct 1910, Charles Kelly married again, in Pinckneyville, Perry County, Illinois. This marriage was to Anna Mariah Jacobs and they had 3 children: Earl Lester McEntire, Charles Eugene McEntire, and Anna Ruth McEntire, all born in Murphysboro, Jackson County, Illinois.

When Charles Kelly died in 1937, his body was interred at Worthen Cemetery, Murphysboro, Jackson County, Illinois.
