Mrs. Downey was left an orphan at the age of four years. She was taken into the home of her grandmother, however, with whom she remained until in her eighth year when she came with her foster parents to this state. She was married in her seventeenth year to Mr. John Downey. Together they made a home into which thirteen children were born, six of whom, with the husband and father, have preceded Mrs. Downey in death. Those who survive the mother are: William, Andrew, Martha, Archie, Franklin, Thomas and John, together with thirty-one grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren, and one half brother, John Landreth of Veider, Nebraska.
Mrs. Downey and her husband were converted and taken into the Antioch Baptist church in 1863. As long as her health permitted she always made her church her home. She was a kind, loving mother, always trying to help in sorrow.
Funeral services were held at the Presbyterian church Sunday at Millersburg. Interment was made in the Oak Ridge cemetery.
She has crossed Death's narrow sea.
Has gone from a world of light
To a home, eternal hers to be.
In a land of blessed light.
Her years, three score and nine,
Were touched with toil and care.
But now she lives in life divine
And will never have a cross to bear.
Her work on earth was done;
Her spirit longed toward heaven to soar.
She had, through faith, the victory won,
And thus for earth she cared no more.
For you, her loved ones, here below,
She often prayed I dare say
That you her Christ might know
And walked within her Lord's own way.
Dear mother, our love for thee was strong,
Now may your Christ our Savior forever be.
Till we reach the heavenly throng,
Redeemed, forever there with thee.
