She was raised in the Cave Creek community and lived in Roane County for most of her life. She worked hard all her life, especially in raising her children and making a home. Her employers included Charles H. Bacon Hosiery Mill, Yale and Towne Lock Plant, Johnson Health Care Center and Logan's Guitars. A friend of labor, she was as proud of the fact that she once cleaned other people's houses for a living as she was walking a picket line as a member of Machinists Local 297. Compassionate and generous, she rooted for the underdog and was a true friend with a genuine smile who enjoyed a good laugh. Her loved ones are heartbroken with her passing, and she will be sadly missed.
She was preceded in death by parents, Grover and Beatrice Phillips; brother, Buddy Phillips; and sister, Blanche Cornett.
Survivors include her husband of 55 years, Howard T. Newman Jr.; sons and daughter-in-law, Kayo Crass, Bobby and Judy Crass and John Newman; daughters and son-in-law, Susan and Jerry Roberts and Tommy Newman; sisters, Belle Brown and Margaret Brown; brother, Grover Phillips; eight grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 25, in Daysville Church of Christ, Rockwood. Funeral service will follow, with Bro. Ernest Abston officiating. Graveside service will be at Daysville Cemetery, Rockwood, Cumberland County. Evans Mortuary, Rockwood, is in charge of arrangements.
