He was born May 30, 1919 in Clarkston, a son of Richard Benjamin and Elizabeth Letitia Godfrey Thompson.
He married Faye Wood on November 19, 1940 in Logan. The marriage was solemnized in the Logan LDS Temple on February 23, 1944.
VerNon was reared and educated in Clarkston and attended North Cache High School. He moved to Garland at the age of 21.
He worked as a heavy equipment operator with the Box Elder County Road Department and was a Superintendent with G A & W Construction. He was also a superintendent with LeGrand Johnson Construction Co., retiring in 1984. He was an avid sportsman. He thoroughly enjoyed the outdoors, hunting and camping with his family. He was a best friend to his three sons, and loved to entertain his grandchildren.
VerNon was a noted storyteller. He was a World War II Naval Veteran.
He was a High Priest in the Garland 2nd LDS Ward, serving in the past as Elders Quorum President, Sunday School President, was a teacher and was active in Scouting.
Survivors include his wife of Garland; three sons and their spouses: Neal and Carol Thompson, Pinetop, Arizona; Ron and Judy Thompson, Uintah; Tim Thompson, Pinetop, Arizona; 15 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren; one brother and two sisters: DeVereThompson, Clarkston; Letha Holt, South Jordan; and Vera Anema, Uintah.
He was preceded in death by one brother and two sisters.
Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, Jan. 27 at 1 p.m. in the Garland LDS Tabernacle. Friends may call at Rogers & Taylor Funeral Home, 111 N. 100 E., Tremonton, Wednesday from 6-8 p.m. and Thursday from 11:15 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Interment will be in the Garland Cemetery.
