Donald C. Martin, 70, of 14758 Old Highway Road, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 24, 2009, at home after a lengthy battle with cancer.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 28, at St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church, with the Rev. Mark Ressler officiating. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Key West, Iowa, where military rites will be accorded by the Dubuque Marine Corps League. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 27, at Egel-hof, Siegert & Casper Westview Funeral Home, 2659 Kennedy Road, where there will be a parish wake service at 3 p.m.

He was born on Feb. 24, 1939, in Dubuque, son of Arnold and Viola (Meyer) Martin. He attended Nativity School and graduated from Loras Academy.

He married Carol Boulting on April 10, 1976.

Donald served in the National Guard as a private first class from 1954 to 1956, then as a corporal in the Marine Corps from 1956 to 1958.

He worked for the United States Postal Service for 40 years. He was a postal carrier for 24 years and then V.O.M.A. for 16 years, retiring on July 3, 1998.

He was a member of St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, Disabled American Veterans, Dubuque Marine Corps League, Dubuque Men's Association, and the Dubuque YMCA Swim Team.

Donald was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed doing yard work, hunting, fishing, training dogs and playing cards, and he spent a lot of time restoring antique cars. He especially enjoyed spending time with his grandson, Hunter.

Donald's memory lives on in his wife, Carol Martin, of Dubuque; two daughters, Lisa (Rick) Kelly, of Dubuque, and Jody (Tony) Lahey, of Sherrill, Iowa; his grandson, Hunter Lahey, of Sherrill; and siblings, Arnold "Arnie" (Sue) Martin, of Kirkland, Wash., and Carolyn "Cookie" (Paul) Bodish, of Dubuque.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three daughters, Sherrie, Victoria and Deborah; and a sister, Marilyn "Maggie" Bryson.
