John Adams died on duty Friday night after suffering a heart attack after fighting 12-hour wildfire west of Mannford. Firefighters from 27 Oklahoma departments, some as far away as Del City and Tinker Air Force Base, stood solemnly inside the First Baptist Church, their attention unwavering from Adams' flag-draped coffin. Forty fire trucks and command cars, their red lights flashing, later escorted the procession to the Oakhill Cemetery northwest of Mannford. Traffic came to a standstill on State Highway 51, and several motorists got out of their vehicles and stood in silent tribute.
