Raised in Parowan, Utah, at the age of nine he herded the cows in the family’s accepting a call to settle Snowflake, Arizona. He completed three years at the stake academy. Being one of the oldest boys, he did a man’s work for his father’s five families. At the age of fifteen he accompanied his father who led pioneers to settle northern Mexico. While helping build a flume, a dropped log broke both his legs. He and Lois and another couple made the arduous trip to St. George to be married. Lois managed well to take care of their six children while he served a two-year mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Besides farming, he carried the mail and freight from Holbrook to Ft. Apache, using the efforts of his sons. Differences in management styles led to a civil divorce in 1916. He tried farming in the Gila Valley and lived with some of his married children. He served a short term mission in 1926.
