An interesting true story comes from David Pope: "as the Union troops were coming through the area of Clarks Creek my Grt-Grt Grandmother, Harriet Fry Bowman, widow of David Bowman, would hide the horses in the woods. A 5,000+ man raiding party came through Western NC in April 1865. After leaving Statesville, they headed for Taylorsville. One group headed south down towards Newton and another headed west towards Morganton. The folks in the area would have been bothered by both groups as they sent out scouts in a wide path along the line of march. I would image the women would have been terrorized as there were only young boys and old men (or wounded soldiers) to protect them."
