Jon A Gilbert, 71 of Duncan, went to be with our Lord on Tuesday, June 2, 2009, in Duncan. Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday in Don granthamm Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev Alex Costea and the Rev Ruth Atterberry offciating. Burial will be in Hope Community Cemetery. The family will receive Friends from 5:30 to 7:30 today at the funeral Home.

Jon was born December 3, 1937 in Lawton, to Orin Abb and Thelma Flowers Gilbert. He graduated from Lawton High School in May of 1955 and attended Cameron University while workin Part time for Southwestern Bell Telephone. After college in 1957, Jon continued working for SW Bell in Chickasha, Altus, Duncan, Oklahoma City, Norman, Houston, Texas and then back to Duncan in 1983 as area manager. His territory reached from Terral through Chickasha, Anadarko, Fort Cobb, Altus, Lawton and Duncan. Jon retired from SW Bell on December 31, 1991 after 36 years of service.

Jon was a member of Stephens United Methodist Church and was very active in many areas. He served as church treasurer for 10 years, chairman of the Church Council and served on the board of trustees. He was a member of the Elks Lodge 2322 for 34 years and president of Oakridge Fire Department for 10 years.

Jon enjoyed hunting and fishing on his land in Colrado and spending time with his family and attending different functions of his grandchildren. Jon was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather. He was a person who would help all who were in need. Jon is survived by his loving wife, Syble, of 40 years; a daughter, Ki Gilbert Whitt and husband, Kevin, of Norman; three sons; Richard Hunnicutt and wife Sheila of Moore, Todd Gilbert and Rob Gilbert, both of Duncan; and nine grandchildren: Kyra Whitt, Jackie Whitt, Jaci Hunnicutt Turner & husband Jarred, Brian Hunicutt & wife Ashley, Megan Gilbert, Lane Gilbert, Miles Gilbert, Jeffrey Gilbert and Jason Lambert. Jon was preceded in death by a step-son Tony Hunnicutt, in 2001; his parents; a sister and brother-in-law. His grandsons will serve as pallbearers. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Stephens United Methodist Church, 905 S Ninth, Duncan, OK 73533.
