John gave testimony in open court in 1661 that he was 41 years old or thereabouts. that means he was born abt 1618-1620. He was transported on the Ark by Leonard Calvert Esq. as a slave. That means that Calvert paid his passage over and he had to work to repay the debt. In doing so, he was free to claim land. We know he was an Anglican by faith and also worked as a mariner. He probably was a poor relation of the noble Neville family, but that connection has yet to be proven. There are hints, but no proof. He transported his first wife, Bridgett Thorsby in 1639 from England. They had three children: James, Ellen, and John. He transported his second wife Johanna in 1651. They had two children: William and Rachel. Much has been made of Rachel not being John's biological daughter which is not true. The document giving her land when she was married to Michael Ashford lists her as the natural daughter of Johanna. However, it is Thomas Hussey and Johanna leaving the property and she certainly was not the natural daughter of Thomas. The Court Records even have a case surrounding her birth and was decided in favor of John and Johanna. She certainly was his daughter. Rachel was only 6 years old when her father died. The Court records for John are voluminous. One hand, it is good because it tells us more about his life. John amassed a large amount of property before he died and had worked himself up to the status of Gentleman.
