Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. An 1839 graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York, he was serving as Major of the 3rd United States Regular Artillery at the beginning of the Civil War. He was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel of the 4th United States Regular Artillery, and to Colonel of the 5th United States Regular Artillery. He also served as commander of the Union Army Military Prison at Fort Delaware, Pea Patch Island, Delaware. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Regular Army on March 13, 1865 for "gallant and meritorious services at the capture of Petersburg, Va". He retired from the Army in 1869.
