Died: 27 Jun 1936 at Saint Johns, Apache, Arizona.
Father: William Haynes Hamblin.
Mother: Betsey Jane Leavitt.
Spouse: Susan Virginia Greer.
Duane was one of the original 13 enlisted Arizona Rangers. He was involved in the Ranger's first big shoot out when on Oct 8, 1901 a posse consisting of Duane, fellow Ranger, Carlos Tofoya and several civilians tracked the notorious outlaw and horse thief, Bill Smith, to their camp on Reservation Creek in the wilderness of the White Mountains. In the gun battle that ensued Carlos and Bill Maxwell, a civilian, were fatally shot. Duane was in the midst of the shooting but escaped unscratched. Two bandits were wounded, but they all managed to get away. Carlos was the only Ranger killed on active duty in the 8 years of their existence. Thanks to contributor Tom Todd for this information.
