Mrs. Whitt was born April 29, 1910, to the late Will D. and Mollie Bette Gentry in Person County. Her late siblings were William Gentry, John Irvin Gentry, Gertrude Gentry, Nellie Watson, Gladys Wilkins, Estelle Gentry, Helen Ferbee and Ruby Enscore.
She married John Thomas Whitt on November 19, 1927. They were married for 54 years. Mr. Whitt died December 15, 1981. Together, they raised six children.
Mrs. Whitt will long be remembered for her work at Providence Baptist Church, where she was a member for 77 years. She was Sunbeams leader for over 35 years, pianist, and a member of the WMU.
Mrs. Whitt was a talented seamstress and quilter. Later on in life, she developed a fondness for ceramics, many pieces of which will be cherished by her family for generations. She was also active at the Roxboro Senior Center.
Her family will also cherish the memories of her positive attitude, wit, and overall love for life. "Granny Whitt" was always quick to give a smile.
Mrs. Whitt is survived by her six children, Peggy Dickerson and husband, Milton Whitfield, of Durham, Jane Slaughter and husband, Pete, of Roxboro, Molly Briggs, of Greenville, Johnsie Woody and husband, Charles, of Durham, John Thomas "JT" Whitt, of Roxboro, and Glynda Carver and husband, Jackie, of Bedford, Va.; eighteen grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, two step-great-grandchildren, and five great-great-grandchildren; and her sister, Julia Gentry, of Roxboro.
