Paul Alexander Nystuen was born November 24, 1924, at home on the family farm in Northfield Township, Rice County, Minnesota, to Caleb and Thea (Svendsen) Nystuen. Born the fifth of six children, Paul took over responsibilities on the Nystuen family farm in 1942, celebrating a century of Nystuen family ownership in September 2008. It was perhaps this occupation that brought the most joy to his life, using his incredible work ethic to care for family, friends, land and animals alike. For more than 50 years, Paul had a date each day at 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. with his 32 "girls," until he retired from milking in1991.

The other "girl" in his life was Mary (Linter), whom he married on June 20, 1953. Rich in spirituality and devout in their faith, Paul's family was a charter member of Bethel Lutheran Church, giving both Paul and Mary a special connection to the church throughout the course of their lives. All six of their children were baptized there, and the couple helped Bethel celebrate its 100th anniversary last fall.

An avid fan of barbershop music, Paul attended the International Barbershop Quartet Contest for the past 11 years. The Happiness Emporium was one of his favorite groups, performing for Paul & Mary at their 50h wedding anniversary in 2003, and again at his hospital bedside in December. Paul was also active in the community throughout his life. He served on the Northfield Township Board, sold real estate in the area, and was a member of the Northfield Lions Club for the past 15 years.

Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Mary; 6 children and their spouses: Barb and Roger Glasgow of Northfield, Tom and Wanda of Eagan, Ron and Becky of Lakeville, Marianne and Steve Dove of Burnsville, Brian and Shelby of Northfield, Jeff and Tammy of Ham Lake; 19 grandchildren: Patrick, Lori (Troy), Lucy, Codi, Ellen, Anna, Ryan, Paul, Leah, Katherine, Denise (Rob), Stacey (Brian), Danielle, Chad, Caleb, Dylan, Emily, Nate, Ian; 9 great-grandchildren: Sullivan, Braden, Taylor, Kylie, Makenna, Payton, Zachary, Ashley, Courtney; 3 brothers and their wives: Mark and Marjorie of Maplewood, Ted and Ardis of Eau Claire, Dave and Prudence of Lakeville; many nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Megan; his parents; and his sisters: Ruth Nystuen and Dorothy Ostlie.

Paul passed away with his family by his side on Friday evening, February 20, 2009, at Bethesda Hospital in St. Paul, at the age of 84.

A celebration of Paul's life will be 11:00 a.m., Friday, February 27, 2009, at Bethel Lutheran Church in Northfield with Rev. Tim McDermott officiating. Music will be provided by Becky Nystuen, Noel Stratmoen and Rhonda Reece. Private interment will be in Northfield Cemetery. Casket bearers will be his grandchildren. Honorary casket bearers will be Dick Viken, Lloyd Martens, Noel Stratmoen, Harley Foster, Dean Ostlie and the Happiness Emporium Quartet: Rod, Jim, Bob and Rick. Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Thursday, February 26, 2009, at Bethel Lutheran Church.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Bethel Lutheran Church or Caringbridge.org.

Arrangements are with the Benson & Langehough Funeral Home.
