British obstetrician, gynecologist and pioneer in treatment of infertility, C.B.E., F.R.S., F.R.C.S. and F.R.C.O.G. Together with British medical researcher Robert Edwards, perfected in vitro fertilization (IVF) of the human egg. Their technique made possible the birth of Louise Brown, the world's first "test-tube baby," on July 25, 1978. He studied medicine at the University of London's St. George Hospital Medical School and, after being licensed in 1939, he became a member of the Royal College of Surgeons. His medical career, though, was interrupted by World War II. He volunteered as a naval surgeon, but he and his shipmates were captured by Italian forces in 1941 after their ship sank in the Battle of Crete. After the war he studied obstetrics, and in 1951 he started to work at the Oldham General Hospital. In 1966, he joined forces with Robert Edwards, a Cambridge University physiologist. Edwards had developed a technique for fertilizing human eggs in the laboratory, in an effort to help women with defective fallopian tubes become pregnant. Together they wrote an account of their collaborative effort, "A Matter of Life", they received a devastating blow in April 1971, when the Medical Research Council denied their application for funds. Their luck changed, when Steptoe received a letter from Dr. Ruth Hinton, medical officer of the Bristol Central Health Clinic, regarding a 29-year-old patient, Lesley Brown, who had been trying for a baby for years. In 1977, an egg was taken from Brown and fertilized in the lab. The baby was born by caesarean delivery.
