2 MEN KILLED BY CAR DURING DISCUSSION FOLLOWING WRECK

Ernest Thomas, 40, and Fred Center, 44, both white, were fatally injured when struck by an automobile during a discussion following a wreck near the fair grounds on the new Buncombe Road about 1:30 o'clock yesterday morning.

William Hayes, 24, of Greer, white, injured when Thomas and Center were fatally hurt, was still unconscious at General Hospital last night and was reported in poor condition.

Ernest Parks, 41 year old negro, said to have driving the car that killed Thomas and Center, left the scene of the accident and was arrested on Mayfield Street yesterday afternoon. He was lodged in county jail in connection with the fatalities.

Coroner George W. McCoy said inquests probably would be held this week.

Highway Patrolman Norris Nettles, who investigated the mishap near the fairgrounds, said a car bearing a North Carolina license plate, driven by Thomas, who formerly had lived in Greenville and had lived in Chester, Pa., for the past five years and was visiting his sister, Mrs. Myrtle Cason, at 505 Queens Street, had parked on the highway facing toward Greenville.

The officer said a car said to have been driven by E.B. Caldwell of Greer and occupied by Hayes was traveling toward Greenville and struck the rear of the Thomas machine. Caldwell stopped and he and Thomas began a discussion as to damages to their respective vehicles.

Center was at a place near the highway and was called over to take part in the discussion, Patrolman Nettles said, and the men were standing at the scene when an old model Buick coach approached, also traveling toward Greenville. The Buick crushed Thomas against one of the parked cars and also struck Center and Hayes.
