At age 14, her family moved to Pocatello, Idaho where Joyce graduated from Pocatello High School. At age 18, she met and married Verl T. Her first two children, Dale T. and Barbara Joyce were born in Pocatello before the family moved to Northern California where Verl found work painting railroad bridges throughout the Northern part of the State.

In 1944, they alighted in Oakland where Verl established his own Verl T. Bennett Painting Company. Marvin Ray, (Myrna) Lenae and Connie Irene were born in Oakland. She lived in Oakland for 44 years when in 1986 she served an LDS mission with her companion husband, in Florida.
