My grandma talked about Uncle Otto very much. He was known as the "Rich Uncle who lived in the city and had lots of nice cars." And, although he was successful on the outside, inside he was scarred by many tragic events in his life.
When he was only about 2 1/2 his mother passed away, followed by his younger brother, Warren, 7 years later and his father 2 years after that. He and his younger sister, Blanche, were then raised by his father's employer, Henry Wedge. The Wedge's were very good to them, but nothing can replace the loss of both of your parents at such a young age.
He was married abt 1907 to Lillian Marsh. They had 1 son together, William, before Lillian ran out on the family. Otto was unable to care for William after that and left him on his own.
He remarried between 1920-1930 to Mary Speakman. Unfortunetly, she died in 1942. A year later, shortly after the anniversary of her death, Otto was, according to his death certificate, "temporarily insane over the recent death of his wife," and shot himself in his apartment.
In spite of his tragic end, I look on him as being that "rich Uncle in the city" and look up to him for continuing on for as long as he could.
