Funeral services were held for Mr. Joseph William Havard, 81, of Lucedale, May 9, 2003, at 10:00 a.m. from the Rocky Creek Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Jeannine Havard of Lucedale; two daughters, Karen Havard of Lucedale and Yvonne Havard, of Lucedale; one brother, Harley Havard of Lucedale; and one grandson, Kirk Helton of Greenwood.

Joseph William Havard, "Dub", was born February 10, 1922 in Lucedale. He was the son of Lee and Kate Havard with one brother, Harley, born 1925.

Dub attended Rocky Creek School for twelve years, graduating in 1940. He often raced his friends on horseback to school. He entered Mississippi State University studying agriculture. He once rode his motorcycle from Lucedale to Starkville and liked to say that was the longest and worst trip of his life.

World War II interrupted his college years at State. He joined the Navy in 1942 and attended classes at Columbia University in New York and the University of Southwestern in Lafayette, LA. He served as Lieutenant aboard the USS Stokes and saw action at Iwo Jima and Okinawa.

After the war, Dub returned to MSU where he received his degree in Agriculture in 1947. On May 2, 1948 he married Doris Jeannine Stinson. They celebrated fifty-five years together this past week. The couple had two daughters, Doris Yvonne and Karen Elizabeth who also reside in Lucedale.

Dub, Harley and Lee ran the family grocery/meat market and Havard Farms, a cattle operation, for more than sixty years until retirement.

Dub served on the Board of Directors for Century Bank until recently. He was an early member of the George County Economic Development Council. His hobbies were raising cattle, farming and traveling. He enjoyed the beach and the mountains.

Pallbearers were Stuart White, Deryk Parker, Mike Stevison, Johnny Smith, Paul Thompson and Jack Peters. Honorary pallbearers were the directors of Century Bank.

Interment was held in the Rocky Creek Cemetery with Rev. Jerry Mixon, Rev. Sonny Atkins, Rev. Roy Myers and Rev. Grant McLain officiating the service.

George County Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Published in the George County Times, May 15, 2003. Submitted by Betty R Marshall.
