Bishop Alexander Walker Wayman of the African Methodist Episcopal Church died Saturday December 1, 1895. He was born free in Tuckahoe Neck, Caroline County, Maryland during 1821. His family owned property in the area consisting of farmland and the steamboat terminus Wayman's Wharf.

Upon becoming licensed as an exhorter for the African M.E. church he became a deacon, quickly establishing himself as a leading figure in the church. He became editor of the new Discpline, the church's book of laws. In 1864 he was named the seventh bishop of the African Methodist Episcopal church.

He was author of "My Recollections of African M. E. Ministers, or Forty Years' Experience in the African Methodist" published by A. M. E. Book Rooms Philadelphia
1881. In 1882 he published his "Cyclopaedia of African Methodism" which contained entries for over 1000 people and places of significance to the denomination.

His funeral was held Tuesday December 4, 1895 at Bethel Church on Saratoga Street. His body lie in state until noon when the services began. Bishop Gaines of Atlanta, Georgia presided. Bishops B.T. Tanner, M.B. Salter, H.M. Turner, James A. Handy, B.W. Arnett took part as well as Revs. J.W. Beckett, T.W. Henderson, W.D.W. Schureman, Dr. John Lanahan, E.C. Eggleston, Theodore Gould, and Prof. John T. Layton.

A great crowd attended the church services. Afterwards an immense cortege escorted the remains to Laurel Cemetery for interment.
