Mary D. Baer, daughter of James and Elizabeth Craig, was born February 10, 1854, near Green Castle, Indiana, and died at the home of her son, Clyde, in Wellsville, Kansas, on Monday afternoon, July 28, at the age of 75 years, five months, and 18 days.

She was united in marriage to Oscar Baer on January 25, 1974, at Butler, Missouri, and to this union six children were born, two dying in infancy. Until November 1881, Mr. and Mrs. Baer made their home in Illinois when they moved near Clay Center, Kansas. In the spring of 1902, they moved to Vinland, Kansas, where they lived 24 years and where Mr. Baer died on May 23, 1926.

Mrs. Baer was reared by Christian parents and united with the Methodist church at the age of 18. After moving to Vinland, she united with the Methodist church there of which where she was a member until her death.

From 1905 until 1923, Mrs. Baer was a librarian for the Vinland library, the oldest library in Kansas. She was fond of reading and enjoyed her work. She was known by the community and especially by the school children as Grandma Baer.

For the past three years, she had made her home with her children and had lived with her son Clyde for two years prior to her death. In addition to her son, two daughters, Mrs. George Newton of Lawrence, and Mrs. Ed Chase of Linn, Kansas, were at her bedside at the time of her death. Other surviving relatives include a daughter, Mrs. Imo Walker of Ottawa; twenty grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren, one sister Mrs. J.H. Baer of Washington, Kansas; and one brother, Fred Craig of Fairbury, Illinois.

Funeral services were held from Vinland Presbyterian Church on Wednesday afternoon, July 30, at 2 o'clock, with Reverend J.E. Morgan officiating. Internment was made in Vinland Cemetery at the side of her husband.
