Son of Amelia and John C Swain

The Late George W. Swain.
Mr. George W. Swain, died at his home, eight miles from Southport on Sunday, May 4th, 1890, at the age of 75 years 3 months and 8 days. He leaves surviving him his wife, with whom he had lived for over forty-nine years. Mr. Swain was a remarkable man in many particulars, for his modest and retiring disposition, preferring the quiet of his happy home to every other place and enjoyment.
His power of consistency as exhibited at all times and in all things, was truly wonderful, he was always patient and forbearing, possessing a quiet mind and fixed determination of purpose. His well established rules for self control were strictly observed and seldom if ever violated.
Mr. Swain was born and raised in the well-known community of Dutchman's, two and a-half miles from Southport, his father coming from Charleston, S. C., when a young man located here, married and engaged in milling operations, raised a family of six children all of whom, save one, have passed beyond the river.
Mr. Swain began his business life as a farmer, increasing his operations as time went on until at the close of the late war he had become the foremost farmer of his section, a turpentine producer and extensive property owner. Since then, as before, he has made his farming operations profitable and his general business successful.
Mr. Swain was a member of the Methodist church and did much for his church and people, he was anxious for the improvement and elevation of the people, generous and sympathetic to the poor, kind and hospitable to all.
The name of George W. Swain was revered by all people and in him is verified that passage of the Holy writ which says, "A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches, mark the perfect man and behold the upright for the end of that man is peace."
