Walter served in the U.S. Army Coastal Artillery at Fort Stevens and at Fort Columbia during World War I. A case of pnuemonia kept Walter from being shipped to fight overseas. During his service, he married his childhood sweetheart, Merthi Bowen, in Astoria, Oregon. Merthi found work cleaning the officers quarters during the war. Walter and Merthi had three children, Lois, Vaderon "Bud" and Mary. The family lived and farmed in Dexter, Oregon. Some of the farm was located on an Island in the Willamette River that was said to have been the most fertile soil in Oregon. Walter was later forced to sell the farm to the Army Corps of Engineers and now most of it is under water in the Dexter Reservoir.
