Michael (Bernhart) Barnhart
Michael and Jacob Bernhart, twins, were born June 8, 1822 in Alsace, Germany. At age 19, they came to America. Jacob settle in Pennsylvania, while Michael came to Wabash County. In 1847, he married Dorothea Stoltz, who was born in German Jan 31, 1827 and came to America as a very young child.
Michael and Dorothea lived near Lancaster for about four years during which time two children, Sarah and George were born. They moved to Edwards County and later built a log cabin on the Lyman Weber farm. Here six more children, Adam, Mary, Elizabeth, Jacob, Margaret, and Susan were born.
George Michael Bernhart, second child of Michael and Dorothea, was born June 13, 1850. He was united in marriage to Anna M Lambert, born Aug 11 1852 in Pittsburg. She was the daughter of Lucy Elizabeth (Baker) Lambert who was born Dec 20, 1826 in Lercestershire, Ashby De-La Zouch, England. Wedding of George and Anna occurred Aug 15, 1872. Records indicate the name Bernhart was changed to Barhnart sometime after the marriage. To their union, were born six children, Dorothea, Lucy E (who passed away at age 11), Lora Frances, George M (who died prior to age 2 years), Anna Mary, Robert L (who died at 7 mo). Anna M (Lambert) Barnhart died in April 1886 and George Barnart married Mary Deischer.
Nine children were born to this union--Nellie Mae, Henry A, Joel H (who died at age 4), Elsie E, infant Harry, Eliza M, Wilbur W, Laura A, and Flora E.
Michael and his twin brother Jacob and their half brother Friedrich's family arrived in New York City, NY on May 14, 1840 aboard the "Oceanus".
